How To Straighten Out Bent Vinyl Vertical Blinds

Have you just noticed that some of your vinyl vertical blinds have miraculously become bent out of shape? Not only will this make them look unattractive, it can actually prevent them from doing their job of blocking out the sun properly. The good news is that you can easily straighten out bent blinds by following a few handy instructions.

Step 1: Remove the vinyl blinds that are bent, along with four that are straight and undamaged. Spread the clips holding the slats in place carefully to avoid breaking them, as they are difficult to replace.

Step 2: Fill your bath three quarters of the way with the hottest water that you are able to get out of the faucet. Put on some thick rubber gloves that go up to your elbows to prevent scalding from occurring.

Step 3: Place the bent section of a single blind into the hot water and hold it under for around two minutes. Remove it from the water and quickly sandwich it between the four straight slats.

Step 4: Position some spring-loaded clamps up and down the length of the stack so that they are squeezed together as the centre blind cools. Make sure that they are all perfectly lined up for the best results.

Step 5: After leaving to cool for 10 minutes, remove the clamps and slide the blind out of the middle. Repeat the heating, pressing and cooling process on each of the other bent slats until they are all straight.

Step 6: Dry all of the vinyl slats with a soft cloth before returning them to the window. Open and close the blinds a few times to test that they work. If the slats still aren’t perfectly straight, repeat the process.

If you notice that a lot of the slats are bent, this could be a result of the vinyl vertical blinds warping in the heat. You can prevent this from occurring in the future by applying a tint to the window. If the slats crack during the bending process, this is an indication of their age. The best way to proceed may be to simply replace them.
